Metaphysical Realism in Literature - Part I of V
Literary fiction has been long divided between realism and genre. But neither allows for the supernatural to be regarded as real inside actual history.
Magical Realism isn’t beholden to any structure; things simply happen. Metaphysical Realism (MR) asks how things work, accounting for mechanism, cost and laws. MR in literature bears no relation to that of philosophy. Here, it relates to occult practices being treated as real technology, inherited from actual traditions, and placed within a narrative honouring documented history, real people and timelines.
Every supernatural act costs something physical, debts compound across generations. Fantasy magic systems invent, whilst MR inherits from real practitioners and primary texts.
Why now? An era of acceptance has taken hold relating to matters that fall under the umbrella of MR: UAP, NHI, psionics, and much more. Intelligence and black budget agencies have researched this stuff, Jack Parsons once did rituals at Caltech, and the documentary substrate exists unanswered. Metaphysical Realism restores the capacity of storytelling to shape the public’s perception of emerging facets of reality through the most nuanced of artforms, fiction.
